The temple Rozan-ji was founded in 938 and had strong connections with the imperial court which contributed to rebuilding after the Great Fire of 1788. Built on the site of the residence of Murasaki Shikibu author of the Japanese classic Genji Monogatari (transl. as 'Tale of the Genji'). Murasaki Shikibu was a courtier and is regarded as one of the greatest authors of narrative prose in Japanese literature. The garden Genji-niwa is a sublime combination of moss and white gravel.
